You Are Not Alone

Preserving faithfulness in hard times.

Read: Deuteronomy 31:1-13

The most important thing I have done in my past is make the decision to turn my will and way over to Jesus. I realized I had been carrying a lot of junk around. I opened my heart and let Jesus in so I could start to get the help I needed while building on my relationship with Him. I have never felt so free and light. I continue to share my story so others can know how Jesus is the only way to salvation and eternity as our Creator, hoping they will experience a sense of freedom from burdens out of their control. I am learning to practice surrendering my circumstances in difficult times, even if the future seems uncertain. I can't afford to let myself be consumed with anxiety and fear regarding how I may be affected. I must think differently, taking refuge in Jesus during the storm and times of hopelessness, no matter the outcome.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Moses was 120 years old when he announced to Israel that he could no longer lead them (Deut. 31:2). During this time, God went out ahead to guide the Canaanites toward their own destruction (Deut. 31:3). Joshua was to succeed Moses upon his death. God directs Joshua to bring victory upon his people to take possession of the land of Canaan, but not before Moses provides counsel to Joshua, “God goes with you, he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deut. 31:6). No matter how big or strong the enemy or the difficulties that lie ahead, God would be with Joshua. Moses continues to affirm once again with these words, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deut. 31:8). This is repeated to emphasize the importance of this event and the words Moses shares with Joshua. It is for all of us to remember.

Israel embarked on a journey of change in leadership, faced their enemies, and endured trying times as they moved to a new land. It took more than 500 years for Israel to claim the land God promised to Abraham. Joshua, a guiding light of faithfulness, accepted the call to lead, faced his fears, and turned the outcome over to God. He stood strong in the face of the challenges that awaited Israel. The key to their survival and success was their unwavering faithfulness to God. This is a testament to the power of faith and the strength it can bring in the most challenging times.

Followers of Christ are not guaranteed anything or any outcome of their desire. Be cautious of anyone who tells you differently. I believe Jesus is worthy of our worship. The truth is that He alone is our hope and salvation. We need to have faith when circumstances seem desolate or hopeless. Why not preserve your faithfulness so your backbone keeps you straight in those uncertain times?

PRACTICE

When you are in a state of despair, doubt, or fear, consider two practices:

 1.      Acknowledge:

What are you feeling?

What is beyond your capability and control?

 2.      Affirm:

a.       God goes before you, knows what is ahead, and prepares a way.

b.      God’s Spirit is with you and will never leave or forsake you.

c.       Jesus is your rock and strength; do not be afraid or discouraged.

Jesus remains on solid ground and will not be shaken. Even in our worst situations, Jesus is worthy of our praise, for he first made the sacrifice, so we already know he understands despair and pain. Hold onto hope and trust in him through your difficult times. Believe God is in everything; you are not alone.

PRAY

Lord,

I listen from the heavens to hear your voice. I find you in this dry and dreary land, and you carry me. You are a faithful God, and you remember me. I rejoice in front of my enemies, for I know you have gone before me to prepare a way. Take my heart and remove all doubt, fear, and anxiety. Fill me up with your unconditional love in which I put all my hope and trust. For all my hope is in you, and you alone. No object or person can provide me with what you provide. Your servant will not be afraid or discouraged. I am not alone and seek shelter and protection from the almighty, the maker of heaven and earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
